As indicated in the Y! app messenger, Craig (SJ), Jon (PHI) and I (NYR) have extensively discussed concerns and possible solutions regarding the promotion / demotion of prospects.
The goal of this post is to present this information and encourage a discussion allowing everyone to better understand what we will do as a League moving forward. Please take the time to familiarize yourself with these details and post your questions and/or comments.
This system would see us eliminate farm team updates altogether.
- Promoting / demoting players is allowed only if prospect started the season on main roster or farm team. This movement can be prospect for prospect, prospect to main roster, prospect to farm team (EMPTY spot) but must respect the 16-player maximum farm team roster. If a farm team prospect must be released to comply, released prospect becomes unavailable for remainder of the season and will be eligible for subsequent prospect draft. *Note: A master list of all owned prospects entering the season would be posted on Y! League message board and on Proboards for reference purposes. The same will be done for released prospects. Also, a prospect may be demoted to farm team throughout the entire season, even if he has surpassed the 82GP threshold at the NHL level (ie: graduated). During the subsequent offseason, graduated players must be kept on main roster or released to free agency, as is currently required.
- A prospect claimed off waivers or via free agency once league opens up is ineligible to be demoted to farm team. Exception: any prospect acquired by trade is eligible for player movement as detailed in previous point.
This change may see some managers have EMPTY spots remaining on their farm team after the 3-round prospect draft. These managers will have the option to participate in a secondary prospect draft which would take place after the submission of main rosters and would respect post-draft waivers. This draft would take place in a Proboards thread dedicated to it. *Note: it is not mandatory for a manager to fill entire 16-player farm team roster.
To help ease the transition to this system, we are considering the addition of two roster spots to the main team. These extra spots could be given to any player, including prospects. *Note: This may or may not be a permanent change. We would need to assess it's impact on the League as a whole before deciding to maintain these extra spots or eliminate them.
This system could also make waiver priority more important (for acquiring newly added players by Y! and/or dropped prospects/players) and make draft picks more valuable (for restocking farm team).
